Top 8 Things You'll Need to be an Artsy Mommy
The following list includes items that are beyond the general arts and crafts supplies that you probably already have. The first 5 in this list are all available at large office supply stores. 1. A paper cutter -- 18" or 24" square. Also called a "paper trimmer." Yes, I know these things can be a little scary. Of course, you'll keep this away from your children. This tool is the most used piece of equipment that I have. This is necessary to take full advantage of all the free art materials that you've gotten. **Read "4 Secrets to Finding Free Art Materials"**
2. Black Sharpies -- My favorite are the Extra Fine Point. Don't get the Ultra Fine Point. The tip is too fragile, and kids wreck them too easily. Get a whole box of them. I use these in lots of projects. I don't recommend letting the Sharpies get mixed in with the everyday markers. Set them aside for supervised projects.
3. Spray Adhesive -- You'll need it for mounting artwork on to pieces of mat board or foam core for display. Not to be used indoors or around children. Keep a flattened cardboard box handy for spraying.
4. Glue Sticks -- Get lots and lots of them. Get a brand name because the generic ones are lousy.
5. Elmer's Glue Gallon -- You can't be an artsy mommy without lots of glue! 6. 8 oz. Squeeze Bottles Get about 6 of them. You'll fill these with glue. I trim a little off the tip with scissors for better flow. The great thing about these bottles is that they are easily unclogged. You don't even need to use the little red cap. No more struggling with those twist caps! Economical too. 7. Ultra Fine Glitter - Opalescent is my favorite. See if you can find it in bulk. The squeeze bottles are great dispensers, just trim off a little from the tip for better flow. Set off your child's projects with that little bit of sparkle!
8. Raffia - I love this stuff. I like to add a little raffia bow to the corner of projects for a little rustic charm. Or you can use it in place of ribbon when wrapping a present or tying up a treat. It comes in a variety of colors, but natural is still my favorite.
